Market Scale

Run the hand scale at a Hong Kong wet market: pick the goods for each slip, slide the poise to the weight asked and ring the bell the moment the beam sits level, before customers lose patience!

How to play

  1. You run the scale at a Hong Kong wet market. Each customer hands you a slip saying how much of something they want, e.g. "Choy sum, 12 taels".
  2. Weights use catties and taels: 1 catty = 16 taels (about 600 g). A slip may say "1 catty 4 taels" (20 taels), "half a catty" (8) or "a catty and a half" (24).
  3. Drag goods from the basket onto the pan (each has a weight tag), then drag the poise along the beam to the weight on the slip. When the goods match the poise reading, the beam sits level.
  4. Once it is level, ring the bell to hand it over. Using the fewest pieces earns a bonus and streaks score more; mistakes cost points and patience. Swipe up on a slip to skip a customer.
  5. New rules join shift by shift: weighing in a bowl (set the poise to goods + bowl), no taking goods back off the pan, the heavy hook, selling by price ($16 a catty, so $24 means a catty and a half), untagged goods (weigh them alone first) and two items on one slip.
  6. 15 shifts across the veg, fish and fruit stalls, each chapter ending with a challenge shift, plus a Daily Market with 3 random rules every day.
